GETTING TO KNOW MIKE DONOGHUE

I have spent most of my working career as a technology consultant working with a wide spread of clients from SME organisations all the way up to multi-national corporations such as FedEx and Boeing.

What is your background?

I have spent most of my working career as a technology consultant working with a wide spread of clients from SME organisations all the way up to multi-national corporations such as FedEx and Boeing. I have grown my own businesses as well and grew my present company organically from £0 to £425k service-only turnover in the space of 5 years at a constant 50% compound growth rate. I have immense experience with 28 years under my belt. I spent 4 years purely on working as a developer. I strongly believe that a technologist is not complete until they can understand code. My main service offering is that of a CIO / IT Director for hire with a focus on growth aspirational SME organisations.

What was your inspiration for getting involved with SME’s?

SME’s usually do what they so obviously extremely well but typically don’t have vertical skills like HR and IT from the outset. I find SME’s extremely innovative and I especially like the fast paced nature of the way they operate along with their aggressive growth plans.  The impact of my services on SME organisations in the past has been truly amazing and this makes my work a passion and not a chore.

Who would your ideal client be?

Would be growth aspirational, forward thinking in terms of wanting to make the most out of technology and most importantly of all – open to new ideas and ways of working. Organisational culture accounts for a lot.

Who do you admire?

I tend to have the most admiration for those who defy convention. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Elon Musk are all fascinating individuals in their own rights and have all made the world a significantly better place through their drive and application of technology.

And, if you had your time again?

Quite simply, I would have become an entrepreneur much sooner although the employed part of my career set me up very well for self-employed life.

Any advice you would pass onto a start up?

Take very calculated risks, stay completely on top of your pipeline and accounts at all times and only employ people when you need two of them.
