Clive has nearly 40 years experience in Industry and over 30 as main board director in the manufacturing and service sectors. He is highly analytical and able to identify and develop strategies to exploit market opportunities and more importantly to “”make a difference”” by finding new customers, generating sales, and increasing profits, as his track record ably demonstrates.
Clive spent his early career years as an economist in the automotive industry with the SMMT, and then from 1973 with Coles Cranes in the mobile crane sector, in charge of Market Planning and Development with emphasis of agreeing and implementing strategic business plans with key overseas dealers. In the early 1981 he became Sales and Marketing Director for one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of heavy duty low loaders, with responsibility for all domestic and export sales and the entire marketing strategy. Clive transformed expanded the sales activity and marketing into new markets and developed strategic alliances with major truck manufacturers in Africa and SE Asia.
He left in 1989 to start his own business, Euro Trailer Rental (ETR) as part of Berisford International Plc, and negotiated a 15% shareholding in the joint venture. Starting with no customer base at all, he built up a thriving business and negotiated long term contracts with many blue chip customers, and along the way gained extensive experience in asset finance, and through an attempted MBO, corporate finance through banks and VCS. ETR was eventually sold to Hill Hire in 1995.
Clive joined the Rygor Group as a consultant in 1995 and was appointed Group Director 1998 with specific responsibility for haulage, logistics, rental and leasing. He repositioned the activity away from general haulage and towards contract based distribution and secured long term highly profitable contracts with many of Industry’s major players. He was responsible for all costing, negotiation, implementation, and the operation of all contracts and thereafter developed long term relationship with customers built on trust and transparency and based regular reviews and the monitoring of performance against budget and KPIs. Also reduced losses from general haulage operation from over £1m to under £200k in 12 months.
As a member of NXD, Clive is now focusing on providing non-executive services to smaller organisations using his 40 years of experience in industry to add significant value to their business.
