Ian White has been the Chief Legal Officer and/or Company Secretary for both listed & major private companies. This has led him developing an expertise in corporate governance and working with boards on effectiveness and performance. He has been involved in a number of board evaluations, both internally and externally.
Ian now works as a consultant both on an interim and specific assignment basis. Over the last 18 months he has undertaken seven board evaluations for FTSE 100/250 companies as an Associate for a board evaluation practice and one on his own account for a grant making body. He is currently working on a board evaluation for a FTSE 100 financial services company on his own account. In addition, this year he spent six months as an internal governance consultant for a FTSE 100 International Bank working on board effectiveness and governance matters generally for the Holdings Board.
In the corporate world, Ian spent the majority of his time in the financial services sector (principally asset management) with roles such as Group Legal Counsel/Company Secretary of Perpetual (listed investment manager), Interim Chief Legal Officer for Openwork Limited (formerly Allied Dunbar) and Interim Chief Legal Officer in the UK for Allianz Global Investors. In the latter role he also undertook a project looking at the effectiveness of the working relationship between the European Legal and Compliance Team (70 people) and the businesses it supported. He has also worked in other sectors and he was Group General Counsel/Company Secretary of the Wilkinson Group (privately owned retail group).
In the charity sector Ian has been a Trustee (and Vice Chair) of two medium sized charities – The Ramblers’ Association and Fitzroy (£26 million turnover, 1000 staff) – in the latter role he has been heavily involved in the acquisition of two other charities and recruiting a new HR Director. Ian has undertaken consultancy work for the NCVO (principally board evaluation and facilitation) as well as teaching on the Trustee Academy for Charity Leaders.
Ian has designed and/or run courses on Corporate Governance/The Role of the Board at institutions such as Ashridge Business School (now Hult) and the Institute of Directors. He has played a major component in courses with professional services firms such as:

Ian’s other consultancy activities include undertaking work for a management consultancy working with in-house legal teams and coaching executives to improve performance and develop their careers (he holds a Coaching Development Certificate in Professional Coaching Skills (accredited training hours by the International Coach Federation).
As well as being a lawyer Ian has an MBA from Ashridge Business School.
