Peter Matthews has over thirty years’ experience of establishing, building, working in and leading advisory businesses, investment management businesses, professional services and blue-chip client accounts.
He also has considerable experience with Employee Owned Businesses (EOBs).
Following graduation from Reading University with a BSc in Agriculture, Peter worked in the Caribbean and East and Southern Africa for the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC). These were managerial roles on very large agricultural (dairy, beef, sugarcane, forestry) projects.
Peter returned to the UK in 1987 and worked for management consultancies, consulting in change management to manufacturing, IT services, and utility companies.
It was during his consulting work that he was first exposed to employee ownership and employee-owned businesses. He now specialise in advising, investing in, and supporting the growth of businesses that are or want to become employee-owned.
Employee ownership is the fastest growing business model in the UK, with such companies as The John Lewis Partnership, Aardman Animations, and Richer Sounds amongst their number.
For over twenty years Peter has worked with and for many companies that are or transitioned to employee ownership. The advisory phase covers everything from vendor’s motivation, strategic intent, and possible share structure to sourcing finance, talking to employees to explain the process, through to project managing the move and governance training for those who will be running the new business. Thereafter Peter worked as a Non-Executive Director or Trustee supporting the growth of these businesses, usually for three to five years.
Most employee-owned businesses have a single shareholder that holds shares on behalf of all employees, namely an Employee Trust. This ensures that a meaningful number of shares – typically a minimum of 20% is held for employees. Peter currently serves on four Trusts as the independent Trustee, typically as the chairman. It is critical that the elected employee Trustees have the support of an experienced, independent person, particularly on how to work with the company’s board.
Despite the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the future for employee ownership, particularly as a business succession solution, looks well assured.
