Robin Hughes

Robin is a senior strategic leader with extensive expertise in working with executives and boards on strategy, valuation, business planning and capital investment.

Robin has over 30 years of international experience working for major oil and gas companies with multibillion-dollar capital investment budgets. The early part of his career was as an engineering manager with Shell, Schlumberger and then BG Group; running large-scale multi-disciplinary projects in the Netherlands, UK, Syria and Algeria.

Over the last 16 years, he has held a series of corporate leadership roles at BG with responsibility for; strategy, economics, strategic planning, markets, portfolio development, decision analysis and competitor intelligence. A period during which BG delivered sector leading returns. Robin worked directly with the company directors on the major decisions facing the company; capital investments, disposals, changes in strategy and finally the price at which to merge with Shell.

As a director of the £1.5bn BG pension scheme, he helped realise enhanced financial security for scheme members when it was closed to further accruals and there was a change of ownership.

Robin is particularly effective in guiding teams to develop investment opportunities that can be actioned. He has a record of enabling management teams deliver optimal strategic decisions, through insightful analysis and trusting relationships. His financial analyst background has given him a keen eye for which activities increase, and which are detrimental, to a firm’s value.

As an NXD non-executive, Robin aims to use his skills in business analysis and high-quality decision making to help SMEs achieve their goals. This includes advising on fit-for-purpose business structures and systems, as well as strategy development and implementation. His broad technical, commercial, financial, and economic experience allows him to make important contributions on a wide range of business issues. Robin’s expertise in determining whether a business within a corporate portfolio should be ‘grown’, ‘held’ or ‘disposed’, applies directly into many of the strategic choices facing SME management.
