Russell’s 25-year career in the technology sector helps NXD engage with a wide range of SME issues in this industry. Operationally, he has been involved with startups, established SMEs, consultancy firms and also several multinationals. He also spent six years making early-stage technology investments for a leading venture capital house.Roles have included business and corporate development, product marketing, R&D management, intellectual property development and exploitation, technology transfer, business planning, company creation, fundraising and M&A.
Russell began his career as an engineer with Marconi and Madge Networks, before creating a communications technology consulting practice for Scientific Generics.He then joined startup Element 14, which was sold to Broadcom for $650m, before moving into venture capital with Prelude Ventures, from which he became a founding partner at DFJ Esprit.He later joined one of his portfolio companies, SiConnect, before founding his own consultancy business (Enlightened Technology).He is also an entrepreneur-in-residence at Imperial Innovations, the technology transfer function for Imperial College. As well as maintaining a portfolio of operational and advisory roles, Russell has also been active at board level for over ten years, both as an investor director and as an independent NED and chairman.
